Its interesting that those of us who work or have worked in-house have similar views. I wonder if we'd have different views on the profession if we worked for a design/web development firm.

Cindy, I could have written a very similar piece myself. I came into the field at about the same time as you and had a similar learning curve working on the same kinds of projects that you mention. I have felt constantly challenged to keep up with changes in the profession. Where a single individual in 2000 could handle almost all elements of site design and construction, those days are fading (if not gone). Teams are now required. Everyone has to specialize to one degree or another. Trying to be jack of all trades is probably a losing battle in a world where quality websites employ solid UX, content strategy, database back-ends, sophisticated coding, CSS, video elements and more. The only way to succeed is specialize and ingest the torrent of new information that comes out each and every day.

Change is the only constant, and that is especially true for the web industry... ;)

The way I see it, the tools will always make design and delivery easier. But the most critical thing here, the reason why the web exists in the first place, is to deliver content. That is and will always remain the focal point for our profession. The tools free us up to focus on what's important.

I agree, Cindy, that the web designer role has become less specialized. I'm working as the only designer supporting multiple developers, and I'm doing UI/UX work, graphic design and front-end development. I have also found it necessary to keep up with Drupal and WordPress. (Oh, and I also majored in fine art/printmaking).

Luke Wroblewski is a great source for mobile statistics. I just saw him speak at An Event Apart, and have his "Mobile First" book. He makes compelling arguments for adopting a mobile strategy.

Well done. That is definitely one l-o-o-o-o-ong form. All the jQuery libraries seemed to have aided you in the end. I try to avoid using so many libraries myself, anything to simplify and lighten the load.
